I think one of my favourites of the kid's pets was our rabbit, Peter. He was a big lop ear, almost the size of a small dog and had quite the personality. If his food or water were empty, he would thump loudly with his back foot on the floor of the cage.

Our dog Prince, a Sheltie, will always be the pet dearest to my heart. When my husband and I came home from a weekend away, the kids barely looked up from the tv to say hello. But Prince raced around the yard, so happy to see us. To this day, every time I see a Sheltie, I have to go over and pet it.

This is so very true. I remember all of my childhood pets and it was so heart breaking when the went away. We had a special place to bury them all. And then we would get a new one.
Kids do love their pets and I think it is so good for them to have one. We had birds also and to this day my sister Karen is very afraid of them, they use to try to nibble on our ears and when they did hers they would always get tangled up in her long hair and scare her to tears.
